Inside Llewyn Davis

Last night I watched Inside Llewyn Davis. A wonderful film from another time when things seemed alive . I am clouded over by age but I remember sitting on the floor at the Dan McConnell pub in Carlton listen to Eric Bogle singing And the band played Waltzing Matilda. It bought back memories from the Irish club on Queen Street listening to a band called Poteen a Wild bunch of Irish hippie boys singing rebel songs as the crowd sang along. Many years ago I travelled to the beautiful town of Edinburgh. I and a couple of others found a small pub. Nothing was happening till a huge blessing of a guy standing at the bar suddenly burst out in song singing O Danny Boy. It was magic. A few musicians arrived and this tiny shoebox of a pub burst with song and Glenfiddich whisky. As the pub was closing we burst out onto the street singing a man’s a man for all that. It was a community of like-minded souls and it was beautiful. I have moved away from the folk scene or it moved away from me as I discovered jazz and another community.
